Pot Odds & Outs Calculator

Enter the pot and the amount you have to call to see the pot odds and the equity a call needs. Enter your outs to get the exact chance of completing your draw on the turn and river in Texas hold'em, next to the rule of 2 and 4 shortcut.

“Next card vs needed” compares the chance of hitting on the next card with the equity needed to call. Hitting your draw does not guarantee the best hand, and the comparison leaves out any extra chips you might win later (implied odds).

How to Use the Calculator

  1. 1In “Pot”, enter the total pot including your opponent's bet. If the pot was $200 and your opponent bets $100, enter $300.
  2. 2In “To call”, enter the amount you must put in. The calculator shows the pot odds and the equity (share of the time you must win) for a call to break even.
  3. 3Enter your outs: the unseen cards that complete your hand. The results assume Texas hold'em after the flop, with two cards to come.
  4. 4Compare: if your chance of winning is higher than the equity needed, the call is profitable in the long run, before any later betting.

The formulas

  • Pot odds = pot : amount to call
  • Equity needed = call ÷ (pot + call)
  • Hit on the next card = outs ÷ 47 (turn) or outs ÷ 46 (river)
  • Hit by the river = 1 − (47 − outs)/47 × (46 − outs)/46

After the flop you can see 5 cards: your 2 hole cards and 3 on the board. That leaves 47 unseen cards, then 46 after the turn. Your opponents' cards are unknown, so they count as unseen.

The rule of 2 and 4 is a table-side shortcut: multiply your outs by 4 with two cards to come, or by 2 with one card to come, to get an approximate percentage. It is close for small numbers of outs and overstates big draws: with 15 outs it says 60% when the exact figure is about 54.1%.

Hitting an out means making the hand you are drawing to; it does not guarantee winning. An opponent can hold or make something better, and these figures leave out implied odds, the extra chips you may win once you hit.

Worked Examples

Calling a half-pot bet

The pot is $200 and your opponent bets $100. The pot is now $300 and you need to call $100, so the pot odds are 3 to 1 and you need 25% equity: $100 ÷ $400.

A flush draw on the flop

With four cards to a flush after the flop, 9 cards complete it. The chance of hitting by the river is about 35.0%; the turn card alone hits about 19.1% of the time. Facing a bet when only one card is still to come, 19.1% is the number to compare with the equity needed.

Facing a pot-sized bet

A pot-sized bet offers 2 to 1 and needs 33.3% equity. An open-ended straight draw (8 outs) hits on the next card about 17.0% of the time, so calling for one card is not justified by pot odds alone.

“By river” is the chance of hitting on the turn or the river, seen from the flop. “Next card” is the turn card alone (outs ÷ 47); on the river after a missed turn it is slightly higher (outs ÷ 46). The last column is the rule of 4 (two cards) / rule of 2 (one card) estimate. Common draws: gutshot straight draw = 4 outs, open-ended straight draw = 8 outs, flush draw = 9 outs, flush draw + open-ended straight draw = 15 outs.

What the Calculator Does Not Cover

  • —It assumes Texas hold'em after the flop with every unseen card equally likely. It does not read hand ranges or account for blockers.
  • —Outs are counted as clean. If some of your outs also give an opponent a better hand, your real chance of winning is lower.
  • —It leaves out implied odds and reverse implied odds: how much more you might win, or lose, on later streets.
  • —Equity needed is a break-even point. In a raked game the true threshold is slightly higher.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate the equity needed from pot odds?

Divide the amount you must call by the total pot after your call. With $300 in the pot (including your opponent's $100 bet) and $100 to call, you need $100 ÷ $400 = 25% equity.

What are the odds of hitting a flush draw?

With 9 outs after the flop, you complete the flush by the river about 35.0% of the time. The turn alone hits about 19.1%, and the river alone, after a missed turn, about 19.6%.

How accurate is the rule of 2 and 4?

Within about 1.5 percentage points up to 8 outs. It gets less accurate as outs increase: 9 outs gives 36% against an exact 35.0%, 15 outs gives 60% against 54.1%, and 20 outs gives 80% against 67.5%.

How many outs does an open-ended straight draw have?

Eight. Holding 5-6-7-8, any of the four 4s or four 9s completes the straight. From the flop, it hits by the river about 31.5% of the time.

What equity do I need to call a pot-sized bet?

33.3%, because the pot odds are 2 to 1. A half-pot bet needs 25% and a one-third-pot bet needs 20%.
