Texas Hold'em Poker
Texas Hold'em is the world's most popular form of poker, the game played in the World Series of Poker Main Event and most major tournaments globally. Unlike other casino games, players compete against each other rather than the house — the casino earns revenue via the rake (a percentage of each pot). Texas Hold'em is a game of incomplete information, probability, psychology, and long-term decision quality. Skill dominates over a large enough sample, making it the only major casino game where a professional player can achieve a sustainable long-term edge over the player pool.
Rules & Gameplay
Each player receives two private hole cards. Five community cards are dealt face up in three stages: the Flop (three cards), the Turn (one card), and the River (one card). Players construct the best five-card hand from any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards. Betting rounds occur before the Flop (pre-flop), after the Flop, after the Turn, and after the River. Betting structure: No-Limit (players can bet any amount up to their entire stack), Pot-Limit (bets limited to the size of the pot), or Fixed-Limit (bets and raises are fixed amounts). Two players post mandatory blinds (Small Blind and Big Blind) to initiate betting. Hands ranked: Royal Flush > Straight Flush > Four of a Kind > Full House > Flush > Straight > Three of a Kind > Two Pair > Pair > High Card.
Basic Strategy
Starting hand selection is the foundation of winning Texas Hold'em. Play tight from early positions and wider from the button (dealer position), where you act last in all post-flop betting rounds. Premium hands (AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK suited) are strong in all positions. Position is critical: acting last gives an informational advantage on every street. Pot odds and implied odds determine whether calling or folding a drawing hand is mathematically correct. Against a pot-sized bet, you need approximately 33% equity to call. Avoid calling too liberally — 'calling stations' are exploitable. Table selection (finding weaker opponents) and bankroll management (20–30 buy-ins for cash games) are meta-skills that separate profitable players from losing ones.
