Table Selection Strategy
How to identify the most favourable table conditions — the overlooked discipline that experienced players use to maximise expected value before placing a single bet.
Table selection is the discipline of identifying and choosing the gaming table or casino with the most favourable conditions before committing to play. For advantage players, table selection can be the difference between a positive and negative expected value session. For recreational players, it significantly affects the cost of entertainment.
Blackjack Table Selection
Key criteria in order of importance:
1. Blackjack payout: 3:2 is standard. 6:5 tables increase the house edge by approximately 1.4% — avoid these unless there is no alternative.
2. Number of decks: Single-deck games are rare but offer the best conditions. Two-deck games are marginally better than six or eight-deck shoes.
3. Dealer rules: 'Dealer stands on soft 17' (S17) reduces house edge by ~0.2% versus H17.
4. Double after split: Allowed is better for the player. Reduces house edge by ~0.14%.
5. Surrender: Late surrender (after dealer checks for blackjack) reduces house edge by ~0.08%.
6. Re-split Aces: Allowed is better by ~0.06%.
7. Penetration (for counters): How deep into the shoe the dealer deals before shuffling. Deeper penetration (70%+ of cards dealt) is essential for effective card counting.
Baccarat Table Selection
- —Commission rate: Standard 5% on Banker. Rare 4% commission tables reduce house edge on Banker to ~0.60%.
- —Number of decks: Most baccarat is 8-deck. Minor edge variation.
- —No-commission tables: Slightly higher house edge in exchange for psychological appeal.
Roulette Table Selection
- —European (single-zero) vs. American (double-zero): House edge difference of 2.70% vs. 5.26%.
- —La Partage/En Prison rules: Halve house edge to 1.35% on even-money bets.
- —Atlantic City rules: Surrender rule for even-money bets (similar effect).
Slot Selection
RTP information is not always disclosed at land-based casinos, but jurisdiction-level data (Nevada Gaming Control Board monthly reports, UK casino reports) provides useful benchmarks. Higher denomination machines typically offer better RTPs.
Speed of Play
Slower games reduce your exposure to the house edge per hour. Sitting at a crowded table with five other players results in fewer hands per hour than a head-to-head table — potentially halving your expected hourly loss at the same stake.
