Penetration
The percentage of a blackjack shoe dealt before reshuffling, critical for card counting effectiveness.
Detailed Explanation
Penetration refers to how deeply into a shoe or deck the dealer deals before inserting the cut card and triggering a reshuffle. For a 6-deck shoe where the cut card is placed 1.5 decks from the bottom, the dealer deals approximately 75% penetration. Penetration is one of the most important variables determining whether a blackjack game is profitable for card counters.
Shallow penetration (50–60%) severely limits counter profitability: true count calculations are less accurate, and the number of hands played at positive counts is minimised. Deep penetration (75–85%) allows counters to accumulate more information about deck composition and exploit more hands under positive count conditions.
Casinos actively manage penetration as a countermeasure. When a suspected counter is identified, pit staff may cut the shoe deeper (reducing penetration to 50% or less), effectively neutralising the count advantage.
