Blackjack Basic Strategy Overview
A concise introduction to optimal blackjack decision-making — the mathematically derived strategy that compresses house edge to 0.5% when applied consistently.
Blackjack Basic Strategy is the set of statistically optimal decisions for every combination of player hand and dealer upcard. Derived from computer simulation in the 1950s–60s, it reduces the house edge to approximately 0.5% in favourable rule conditions — compared to 2–4% for uninformed play.
Core Principles
- —Always stand on hard 17 or above
- —Always hit on hard 8 or below
- —Always split Aces and 8s
- —Never split 5s or 10s
- —Double down on hard 11 against dealer 2–10
- —Stand on hard 12–16 against dealer 2–6; hit against 7–Ace
Soft Hand Rule
Soft 17 (Ace-6) should always be hit or doubled — never stood on. Soft hands are flexible because the Ace reverts to 1 if the next card would cause a bust. Playing soft hands as hard hands leaves significant value on the table.
Checking the Rules First
Basic strategy varies based on: - Number of decks: single-deck differs from 6-deck - Dealer soft 17 rule (H17 adds ~0.2% to house edge) - Blackjack payout: 3:2 vs 6:5 (6:5 adds ~1.4% to house edge — avoid)
Legality
Basic strategy is entirely legal. It is not card counting and is permitted at all casinos. Printed strategy cards are allowed at most properties. Mastering it takes 40–80 hours of practice but dramatically improves your expected result.
