The Labouchère System
A cancellation-based negative progression system where the player uses a number sequence to determine bet sizes, crossing off numbers after wins and adding after losses.
The Labouchère system (also called the Cancellation or Split Martingale) was devised in the 19th century and attributed to British politician Henry Labouchère. It is one of the most intellectually engaging betting systems because it requires active bookkeeping rather than mechanical doubling.
How It Works
Write down a sequence of numbers — for example: 1-2-3-4. Your bet for each round is the sum of the first and last numbers in the sequence (1+4 = 5 units). If you win, cross off both numbers. If you lose, add the amount you just wagered to the end of the sequence.
Example sequence: 1-2-3-4 - Round 1: Bet 5 (1+4). Win → cross off 1 and 4. Sequence: 2-3 - Round 2: Bet 5 (2+3). Win → cross off both. Sequence complete: profit = 10 units - If Round 1 were a loss instead: Bet 5, lose → add 5 to end. Sequence: 1-2-3-4-5
When the sequence is completed (all numbers crossed off), the total profit equals the sum of the original sequence.
Why It Feels Controllable
Unlike the Martingale, the Labouchère has a defined target (complete the sequence = profit equals the sum of starting numbers) and moderate bet escalation. Losses add one number; wins remove two. In theory, winning one-third of bets can complete a sequence.
The Mathematical Reality
The Labouchère does not overcome the house edge. In the presence of a house edge, the sequence tends to grow: bad runs extend the number line dramatically, requiring large bets. The system works when bet limits are never reached and sessions are short — the same conditions under which any system appears to work. Extended play will eventually produce a long losing run that inflates bets beyond table limits or bankroll.
Reverse Labouchère
The Reverse Labouchère (also called the 'Split Paroli') adds numbers after wins and cancels after losses — the opposite of the standard system. It is a positive progression designed to capture streaks, with losses limited to the value added in the current sequence.
