The Paroli System (Reverse Martingale)
A positive progression betting system that doubles bets after wins and resets after losses — designed to capitalise on winning streaks while limiting downside.
The Paroli System — sometimes called the Reverse Martingale or Anti-Martingale — inverts the Martingale logic: instead of doubling after losses, you double after wins. This approach limits exposure to one base unit per losing hand while attempting to capture profit from winning streaks.
The Standard Paroli Structure
Most Paroli practitioners apply a three-win reset:
1. Bet 1 unit. If you lose: restart at 1 unit. 2. If you win: bet 2 units. 3. If you win again: bet 4 units. 4. If you win a third time: RESET to 1 unit, banking your profit. 5. At any point a loss occurs in steps 2–4: restart at 1 unit.
A successful three-step sequence returns 7 units (4+2+1 profit) from a single unit at risk, since the doubling uses winnings rather than new capital.
Why It Resonates
Paroli has genuine psychological appeal because: - Maximum loss per sequence is one base unit - You are 'playing with the house's money' after step 1 - No exponentially growing bet requirements - Easy to execute at any stake level
Mathematical Reality
On European roulette, the probability of three consecutive even-money wins is (18/37)^3 = 11.45%. The expected value per sequence: - Win all 3: 11.45% × 7 units = 0.802 units - Lose at step 1: 48.65% × -1 unit = -0.487 units - Lose at step 2: 11.45% × -1 unit = -0.115 units - Lose at step 3: 11.45% × -1 unit = -0.115 units
The house edge remains 2.70% over the long run regardless of the progression.
Where Paroli Excels
Paroli is a sensible approach for players who want to make the most of winning streaks while maintaining strict session-level loss limits. It is particularly suitable for baccarat, where winning streaks ('runs') are culturally significant to Asian players who track streak patterns on bead road score cards.
