Casino de Montréal
The French Pavilion reborn as a casino — Expo 67's architectural legacy.
1 Avenue du Casino, Île Notre-Dame, Montréal, Québec, Canada
Operated by: Loto-Québec
Casino de Montréal opened on October 9, 1993 in the former French Pavilion built for Expo 67 — the 1967 World's Fair that made Montréal an international city and produced Île Sainte-Hélène and Île Notre-Dame from landfill in the Saint Lawrence River. The French Pavilion's bold modernist geometry, designed by Jean Faugeron, was preserved and integrated into the casino complex, connecting to the adjacent Québec Pavilion in a subsequent expansion.
Operated by Loto-Québec, the provincial government lottery and gaming authority, Casino de Montréal is the largest casino in Canada by number of gaming positions and the fourth-largest in North America by some measures. The casino floor encompasses five floors with approximately 3,200 gaming machines and 120 table games. Access from downtown Montréal is via the Métro's Yellow Line, which stops at Jean-Drapeau station — making Casino de Montréal unusually accessible by public transit for a casino of its scale.
The casino's Expo 67 heritage is a genuine draw: visitors come as much to experience the architectural remnant of one of the most celebrated World's Fairs in history as to gamble. The site also offers views of the Montreal skyline and the Saint Lawrence River, and the surrounding Parc Jean-Drapeau encompasses the Biosphere (Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome, also an Expo 67 landmark) and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
