Casino de Monte-Carlo

The world's most glamorous casino — open since 1863.

Place du Casino, Monte-Carlo, Monaco

Operated by: Société des Bains de Mer (SBM)

The Casino de Monte-Carlo is arguably the most famous casino in the world. Designed by architect Charles Garnier — who also created the Paris Opéra — and opened on January 14, 1863, it is a Belle Époque masterpiece of gilded ceilings, stained glass, and theatrical grandeur. Its mere name is synonymous with luxury, risk, and sophistication.

The casino sits at the heart of Monaco's Place du Casino, flanked by the Hôtel de Paris and Café de Paris, and with a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean. The Principality of Monaco derives a significant portion of its revenue from the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM), the company that operates the casino and most of Monaco's luxury hospitality infrastructure.

The Casino de Monte-Carlo is primarily a European roulette house — the game was effectively codified here and the casino's single-zero tables remain the global reference point. Access to the Salles Privées (private gaming rooms) requires formal dress, a minimum age of 18, and a deposit. Monégasque citizens are prohibited by law from gambling at the casino.

The casino gained enormous cultural cachet through its association with James Bond, appearing in or inspiring scenes across multiple Bond films including GoldenEye, Casino Royale (1967), and Never Say Never Again.
