The Contra D'Alembert System

A positive progression betting system that increases bets by one unit after each win and decreases by one unit after each loss — the reverse of the classic D'Alembert.

The Contra D'Alembert (also called the Reverse D'Alembert) inverts the logic of the classic D'Alembert system. Where the original increases bets after losses to recoup them, the Contra version increases after wins, capturing upswings and reducing bets after losses to limit downside.

How It Works

Set a base unit (e.g., $10). After every win, increase the bet by one unit. After every loss, decrease by one unit (never below the base).

Example: - Bet $10: Win → next bet $20 - Bet $20: Win → next bet $30 - Bet $30: Loss → next bet $20 - Bet $20: Loss → next bet $10 (back to base)

The Core Appeal

The Contra D'Alembert is a streak-chasing system. When winning runs occur, it scales up naturally, extracting larger profits from hot sequences. When losing, it retreats step by step rather than catastrophically. Unlike the Martingale, there is no exponential blowup — the worst case is a gradual reduction to the base unit.

Strengths and Limits

The system requires balanced wins and losses to generate profit: each win after a loss nets +1 unit, but the cumulative position depends on win/loss sequence, not just totals. A pure alternating win-loss pattern (WLWLWL) at even-money results in approximately break-even at the base unit. Real profit occurs when wins are clustered — when streaks happen to align with elevated bet levels.

Compared to Classic D'Alembert

The Contra version suits psychologically aggressive players who prefer riding momentum. The classic D'Alembert suits players who want to 'fight' losing streaks. Neither changes the house edge; the difference is purely in the risk profile: positive progressions risk more during winning streaks, negative progressions risk more during losing streaks.
