Spanish 21

Spanish 21 is a blackjack variant played with a 48-card Spanish deck — all four 10s are removed from each standard deck, leaving only Jacks, Queens, and Kings as ten-value cards. This removal of 10s increases the house edge, but Spanish 21 compensates with extremely liberal player rules: player blackjack always beats dealer blackjack, late surrender is always allowed, doubling down is permitted on any number of cards, and bonus payouts exist for specific five-to-seven-card 21 combinations. With optimal strategy, the house edge is approximately 0.4–0.76% depending on the specific rule set, making Spanish 21 competitive with standard blackjack.

Rules & Gameplay

Played like standard blackjack but with Spanish decks (no 10s). Player 21 always wins, even against dealer 21. Dealer must hit on soft 16 in most Spanish 21 configurations. Key rules: player can double down on any number of cards (not just first two); redoubling is permitted at some properties; late surrender is always available; multiple splits are allowed. Special payouts for 21: five-card 21 = 3:2, six-card 21 = 2:1, seven-or-more-card 21 = 3:1, 6-7-8 of mixed suits = 3:2, 6-7-8 suited = 2:1, 6-7-8 of spades = 3:1, 7-7-7 of mixed suits = 3:2, 7-7-7 suited = 2:1, 7-7-7 of spades = 3:1. Super Bonus: same-suit 7-7-7 when dealer shows a 7 = $1,000 (for bets under $25) or $5,000 (for $25+ bets).

Basic Strategy

Spanish 21 strategy differs from standard blackjack primarily around doubling and surrender decisions. The removal of 10s makes the dealer less likely to bust, reducing the value of standing on stiff hands. Key differences: hit hard 15 and 16 more frequently than in standard blackjack; double down more aggressively on multi-card totals; use late surrender on hard 15–17 against dealer 9/10/Ace more liberally. Always take the special 21 bonuses by pursuing five-to-seven-card 21s rather than stopping at a safe total when close. The match play 21 side bet (suited 6-7-8 or 7-7-7) adds excitement but carries a modest house edge of around 3%.
