Pontoon

Pontoon is the British equivalent of Blackjack — the same fundamental game of reaching 21 without busting — but with several rule differences that create a distinct strategic character. The name derives from the French Vingt-et-Un (Twenty-One), corrupted through military slang during World War I. Pontoon is played in British and Australian casinos, and a Singaporean variant (also called Pontoon but with reversed Banker/Player roles) is the standard blackjack format in many Southeast Asian casinos. The house edge on standard Pontoon with optimal play is approximately 0.38%, slightly lower than most blackjack variants.

Rules & Gameplay

Dealer receives two face-down cards (both hidden, unlike blackjack's exposed upcard — this is a key difference). Player receives two cards and acts first. Pontoon (Ace + 10-value card) beats Dealer's Pontoon and pays 2:1. Five-Card Trick (any five cards not exceeding 21) beats everything except Pontoon and pays 2:1. Standard 21 pays 1:1. Player options: Twist (Hit), Stick (Stand — only on 15 or more; cannot stick on fewer than 15), Buy (Double Down — can be done multiple times up to 5 cards), Split. Player must always Twist on 14 or below — cannot Stand. Dealer takes all ties (unlike Blackjack where ties push). Dealer wins all ties, which is offset by the 2:1 Pontoon and Five-Card Trick payouts.

Basic Strategy

Never stick on fewer than 15. Pursue Five-Card Tricks aggressively on soft hands — drawing to five cards on soft totals is correct even on soft 19 in some configurations because the 2:1 payout justifies the risk. Buy (Double Down) on hard 9, 10, 11 and on soft totals where buying makes sense. Split Aces always; split pairs of 2s–8s in most configurations. The hidden dealer card is the game's major challenge — unlike Blackjack, you cannot adjust strategy based on the dealer's visible upcard. Basic strategy charts for Pontoon are available; they differ from Blackjack charts primarily in being more aggressive about drawing cards to accumulate the Five-Card Trick.
