Five Card Draw
Five Card Draw is the original and simplest form of draw poker — the format that defined the game before Texas Hold'em's rise. Each player is dealt five private cards, then has one opportunity to discard any number and draw replacements, aiming to improve their five-card hand. In the casino version, the player faces the dealer: both sides draw, the dealer must hold at least a pair of Jacks to qualify, and the player's hand is compared against the dealer's to determine the payout. The strategic core is the hold decision — which cards to keep and how many to draw — balancing immediate hand strength against the odds of improvement. Recognising draw targets (four-card flush, open-ended straight, trips drawing to a full house) and understanding dealer qualification are the two pillars of basic strategy.
Rules & Gameplay
Players place an ante bet, then receive five cards face-up while the dealer receives five cards face-down. During the draw phase, players click each card to toggle HOLD or DISCARD, then press DRAW. Non-held cards are replaced with new cards from the remaining deck. The dealer simultaneously draws according to a fixed strategy (keep pairs or better, hold high cards). Dealer's cards are then revealed one by one. The dealer qualifies with a pair of Jacks or better. If the dealer does not qualify, the player wins 1× their ante regardless of hand strength. If the dealer qualifies, the stronger five-card hand wins: the player wins the listed payout multiplier, loses the ante on defeat, or pushes on a tie.
Basic Strategy
Hold all made hands of Straight or better — no improvement needed. With Three of a Kind, keep the three matching cards and draw two (Full House ~8.5%, Quads ~4.3%). With Two Pair, keep four cards and draw one (Full House ~8.5%). With a high pair (Jacks or better), keep two and draw three. With a low pair, also keep two and draw three, targeting Trips. With no pair, prioritise four-card flush or straight draws (keep four, draw one). Otherwise, keep high cards (J–A) and draw the rest. Against a potentially non-qualifying dealer, there is no incentive to fold — always draw and let the hand play out.
