Fan-Tan

Fan-Tan is one of the oldest casino games in the world, originating in China and brought to the United States by Chinese immigrants during the Gold Rush era of the mid-19th century. It was the dominant gambling game in early Macau before baccarat overtook it, and is still offered as a heritage game at a small number of Macau casinos. The game is completely mechanical and simple: a handful of small buttons (or beads) is counted down in groups of four, and players bet on whether the remainder will be 1, 2, 3, or 4. The house edge on the primary bets is approximately 2.5%.

Rules & Gameplay

A large handful of small buttons, coins, or beads is placed on a table and covered. Players bet on 1, 2, 3, or 4. The cover is removed and the dealer uses a bamboo stick to move the buttons aside in groups of four until four or fewer remain. The number remaining (1, 2, 3, or 4) determines the winning number. Main bet (Fan — betting on a single number): pays 3:1 (house keeps 1 unit of 4). Additional bets: Kwok (two numbers, wins on either): pays 1:1. Nim (two numbers, wins on one and pushes on other): pays 1:1 with push. Sheh-Sam-Hong (three numbers, wins on two, pushes on one): pays 1:3 on wins. House edge on Fan bet: 2.5% (one unit withheld from four). Traditional tables use Chinese character markings for betting positions.

Basic Strategy

Fan-Tan is a pure probability game with no strategic decisions — every outcome is determined by the random quantity of buttons. The Kwok (two-number) bet offers the same expected value as a single-number bet in most configurations. The primary strategic choice is bet selection: the simple Fan bet (single number, 3:1) and Kwok (two numbers, 1:1) offer equivalent expected values. Nim and Sheh-Sam-Hong carry slightly worse odds in some configurations due to the push mechanics reducing effective payout. Play Fan-Tan for its cultural and historical novelty value — it is among the rarest game offerings globally and provides an authentic connection to Macau's pre-Western casino heritage.
