Badugi

Badugi is a distinctive draw poker variant in which the goal is to hold four cards — each of a different suit and a different rank — forming a 'Badugi'. Aces are always low (value 1), making the perfect hand A-2-3-4 with all four suits. Three draw rounds alternate with four betting streets, creating rich strategic depth: the number of cards an opponent draws is visible information, and standing pat (drawing zero) signals either a completed Badugi or a bluff. Believed to originate from South Korea, Badugi rewards hand-reading skills and disciplined drawing over pure card luck.

Rules & Gameplay

Each player is dealt four private cards. A betting round (pre-draw) follows, using blind structure (Small Blind + Big Blind). Players then choose which cards to discard and draw replacements — zero (stand pat) to four new cards are drawn simultaneously. Three draw rounds alternate with three more betting rounds (post-draw 1, 2, 3). At showdown, hands are ranked: a 4-card Badugi (all suits and ranks unique) beats any 3-card hand; 3-card beats 2-card; 2-card beats 1-card. Within the same count, the hand whose highest card is lower wins — for example, A-2-3 beats A-2-4 at the 3-card level. If two hands tie exactly in count and card values, the pot is split.

Basic Strategy

Count your Badugi cards first: identify which of your four cards form the current best Badugi hand (no duplicate suit or rank). Cards outside this set are dead weight and should normally be discarded. With a 4-card Badugi, always stand pat — drawing risks breaking your completed hand. With a 3-card Badugi, draw one card on rounds 1 and 2; consider standing pat on round 3 if your high card is 7 or lower, as improving is unlikely and the stand-pat bluff represents a made Badugi. Draw-count reading is the key advanced skill: an opponent who draws zero on the final round likely holds a Badugi — but top players occasionally stand pat with a 3-card hand as a bluff. Tight players should fold pre-draw or early with weak 2-card starting hands, as they face three rounds of improvement opportunity for opponents.
