Sands Macao
The casino that changed everything — Las Vegas comes to Macau.
Largo de Monte Carlo, Macau Peninsula
Operated by: Sands China Ltd.
Sands Macao, which opened on May 18, 2004, was the first Las Vegas-style casino to open in Macau after the gaming liberalisation of 2002 ended Stanley Ho's four-decade monopoly. Developed by Sheldon Adelson and Las Vegas Sands Corporation, Sands Macao proved beyond any doubt that Macau could become a global gaming powerhouse — its opening-year revenues were so far above projections that the property repaid its entire construction cost within a year.
Situated on the Macau Peninsula near the Lisboa, Sands Macao was a deliberate transplant of the Las Vegas entertainment casino model: bright, open floors, slot machines beside low-minimum table games, and the suggestion that gambling was fun and accessible rather than the exclusive domain of high rollers or junket VIPs. That philosophy transformed the market.
Today, the original building has been overshadowed in size by the Cotai Strip properties, but Sands Macao remains operational and historically significant. The property includes a 289-room hotel tower added in 2007. The casino floor spans approximately 229,000 square feet and continues to attract peninsula visitors and tourists exploring Macau's historic downtown area.
