Casino Deauville

Coco Chanel's summer retreat — the original playground of the Belle Époque elite.

Rue Edmond Blanc, Deauville, Calvados, Normandy, France

Operated by: Groupe Barrière

Casino Deauville opened in 1912 in the Normandy seaside resort of Deauville, a town that since the Second Empire has served as the summer playground of the French and international aristocracy, and subsequently of filmmakers, artists, and wealthy Parisians. Designed in a distinctive Norman architecture style with half-timbered facades and slate roofs that reflect the regional vernacular, the casino occupies a prominent position on the seafront promenade.

Deauville's cultural associations are extensive: Coco Chanel lived here for years and opened her second fashion house in Deauville in 1913, partly inspired by the clientele she observed at the casino; the American Film Festival of Deauville has been held annually since 1975 and uses the casino as a venue; and the Deauville racecourse — immediately adjacent — is one of the most prestigious flat-racing venues in Europe.

The casino today offers roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and poker across elegant salons that preserve the Belle Époque decorative scheme. Groupe Barrière, the major French casino and hotel operator, manages the property within its portfolio that includes the adjacent Hôtel Royal and Hôtel Normandy. The combination of beach, racing, film festival, and casino makes Deauville's late-summer season (August-September) one of the most concentrated luxury tourism periods in northern France.
