Sun City Resort
Southern Africa's most legendary resort destination, since 1979.
Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa
Operated by: Sun International Ltd.
Sun City Resort was developed by South African hotelier Sol Kerzner and opened in 1979 in what was then the nominally independent homeland of Bophuthatswana — a legal status that allowed gambling during South Africa's apartheid era when it was otherwise prohibited. This unusual history gave Sun City its initial fame and a clientele that included major international entertainers.
Today, Sun City is a fully integrated resort in the North West Province, featuring four hotels ranging from the iconic Palace of the Lost City — an extraordinary architectural confection of turrets, towers, and jungle landscaping — to the family-oriented Cabanas. The resort encompasses golf courses designed by Gary Player, a wave pool and waterpark, a game reserve with Big Five safaris, and two casinos.
The main casino at Sun City covers 4,000 square metres with approximately 850 gaming machines and 50 live gaming tables offering roulette, blackjack, and punto banco. The resort regularly hosts major golf tournaments on the Gary Player Country Club course, and was the site of the 'Million Dollar Challenge' tournament from 1981–2000.
