Loss Rebate Agreements
How casinos use structured loss rebates to attract and retain ultra-high-net-worth players — the economics of giving back a percentage of losses.
A loss rebate agreement is a private arrangement between a casino and a high-value player (or their representative) guaranteeing that the player will receive a cash refund equal to a negotiated percentage of their net losses, subject to specified conditions on minimum play volume or trip duration.
Typical Structure
A premium player negotiates a 10% loss rebate with a casino for a three-day trip, with a minimum rolling chip volume of HK$10 million:
- —If the player loses HK$5 million in net chips: they receive HK$500,000 back
- —If the player wins: no rebate is paid (or sometimes a partial 'discretionary' rebate is offered to maintain the relationship)
- —If the volume minimum is not met, rebate conditions may be reduced
The Mathematics
The casino must price the rebate carefully. A 10% loss rebate on a game with a 1.06% house edge does not simply reduce the casino's edge to 0.96%. The rebate applies only to sessions in which the player loses — a conditional calculation that changes the effective house advantage significantly.
The correct calculation requires modelling the probability distribution of outcomes at the agreed volume. At lower volumes (fewer bets), the player has a wider range of possible outcomes. Loss rebates are most valuable to the player when volume is low — because larger variance means a greater probability of winning enough to make the rebate's value less relevant, while the downside of large losses is cushioned.
This is why sophisticated casinos apply volume minimums: sufficient volume narrows the distribution so the house edge predictably dominates.
Player Strategy: Volume Management
Sophisticated players with loss rebate agreements deliberately manage their volume: - Play in short, high-stakes sessions to preserve optionality - Stop early if well ahead (the rebate has no positive value on a winning session, so locking in gains is optimal) - Continue playing on a losing session to maximise rebate value
This strategy — playing optimally within a loss rebate structure — can convert a negative-expectation game into a positive one for the player, which is why casinos carefully calibrate rebate percentages against minimum volumes.
