Casino Markers and Credit Lines

How casino credit works — from establishing a credit line to drawing markers at the table, and the legal mechanisms for debt collection.

A casino marker is a negotiable instrument — effectively a counter cheque — that allows a player to draw chips from the casino cage against a pre-established credit line. The system enables high-volume play without cash transfers and is a cornerstone of VIP gaming relationships in Nevada, Atlantic City, and other regulated jurisdictions.

How to Establish a Credit Line

Applying for casino credit typically involves: 1. Completing a Central Credit application (Central Credit is the gaming industry's credit reporting bureau, akin to a gaming-specific credit bureau) 2. Providing bank account details and authorising the casino to verify average bank balances 3. The casino reviews the application and sets a credit line based on average available cash — typically 10–30% of average bank balances

Casino credit is interest-free for a specified period (typically 30 days in Nevada).

Drawing a Marker at the Table

A player at the table requests a marker. The floor supervisor calls the cage, confirms the available credit, and brings a marker slip to the table. The player signs, and chips are delivered. The marker is a legally enforceable cheque.

Repayment

In Nevada, casino markers are presented for payment 30 days after issuance. The player may: - Pay by wire transfer or cheque before the due date - Return to the casino and 'redeem' the marker with chips won - Request a repayment extension (at the casino's discretion)

Failing to pay a marker in Nevada is a criminal offence under Nevada Revised Statutes 205.130 — treated as issuing bad cheques. The casino district attorney's office can prosecute. This strong legal backing (unavailable for gaming debts in most other jurisdictions) makes Nevada markers uniquely powerful instruments.

Macau and International Gaming Debt

In Macau, gaming debts are legally enforceable under Macau law, unlike in mainland China. Junket operators historically managed debt collection from mainland Chinese players through informal mechanisms. The 2022 crackdown significantly disrupted these collection systems.

Credit Management for Players

For players, casino credit offers: - Eliminating the need to carry large cash sums - The ability to manage cash flow with a 30-day interest-free period - Potential for comp credits based on marker volume

The risk: markers are real debts with real legal consequences. Overextension of casino credit is a significant contributor to problem gambling among mid-to-high stakes players.
